BOTM #34

Not had the best of month with how many books that I have read in July but it wasn't because I read anything bad it was more that the Commonwealth Games got in the way as well as being ill also didn't help.
Here's what I did read in July:

  • Spark (Elemental, #2) by Brigid Kemmerer - 5/5
  • Violet Midnight (The Enchanters, #1) by Allie Burke - 2.5/5
  • Red and Her Wolf (Kingdom, #3) by Marie Hall - 3/5
  • Because of Low (Sea Breeze, #2) by Abbi Glines - 5/5
  • Breaking All Her Rules by Maisey Yates - 3/5
  • Elixir (Covenant, #3.5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout - 4/5
  • Made For You by Melissa Marr - 5/5
And the book of the month goes to...

I did have a few 5 star books but in the end if I could give this book 10 stars I would it was amazing and I can't wait for everyone to read this book as you will be in for a treat! My review will be coming within the next week so keep your eye open for that.

Synopsis:
Long ago there lived a beautiful child. Her name was Violet. Fair of skin, with blonde hair and large blue eyes. Born of wild magic, she was a woman with a child’s heart. Innocent and lovely, but not at all what she seemed--you see Violet went by another name: The Heartsong.
She was the child of fairy magic, the physical manifestation of all fae kinds unbridled power. Cosseted and pampered, she grew up in isolation, never knowing who she really was, or why there were those who’d seek to harm her.
Ewan of the Blackfoot Clan is a wolf with a problem. He’s been sent to kill the Heartsong, but the moment he lays eyes on the blonde beauty he knows he’ll defy the evil fae he works for to claim Violet as his own.
This is the tale of Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf, as it really happened...

"She traced the curve of his lips. "My, what big teeth you have."
Ewan snapped them at her. "The better to eat ye with, my dear."

I have read the first two and the fifth book of this series which I have enjoyed which I thought that maybe this would be the same but it just fell flat to the others I've read.

I'm not a huge fan of these covers but I do prefer them over the other versions. I do like the hint of colour as it matches the title as well as a running thread in the story.

The first half of this book wasn't good as I really didn't think I would continue with it but I'm glad I kept with it as by the end I was really enjoying it. The first half was just a lot of confusion with not much going on in the romance or action I was pretty much bored. Once there was some chemistry going on between the two main characters I felt it then started to make it more interesting wanting to see if she finally let go of her past and be with him.  I do think that the reason why I couldn't grasp the story was because it was too short so there didn't seem to be any reasoning behind things that was happening until the end and then everything was rushed to get things sorted out.

I think that out of all of the books I have read in this series these two main characters are my least favourites especially Violet. Although there was a reason why Violet was the way she was but because of those reasons she was hard to warm up to. Ewan was the better character out of the two of them as he was always there for Violet even when she kept pushing him away.

Overall I found this review hard to do as I have enjoyed this series but this one just doesn't live up to them.

"Ewan. She trembled, he'd found her. Saved her. Love you. Love you so much, she thought over and over even as she poured more and more death into him."

  • Gerard's Beauty (Kingdom, #2) by Marie Hall - 4/5
  • Wild Cards (Wild Cards, #1) by Simone Elkeles - 5/5

  • Tempting the Best Man (Gamble Brothers, #1) by J. Lynn - 5/5
  • Losing It (Losing It, #1) by Cora Carmack - 5/5
  • Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins - 5/5

And the book of the month goes to...

Suddenly Royal (Suddenly, #1) by Nichole Chase

I absolutely adored this book even more than the other five stars I gave because if I could give this book more I would! My other five star books are still five star ratings and I love them so much but this book just took me somewhere no other book has ever done for me it's the best book I have read so far.
My review will be up at some point during this week so look out for that.

Book Review: Gerard's Beauty (Kingdom, #2) by Marie Hall

Blurb:

A not so classic retelling of Beauty and the Beast, as seen through the eyes of the villain...

Betty Hart has had it with men. Jilted in love, her life now consists of shelving books by day, watching too much Anime by night, and occasionally dressing up like a superhero on the weekends with her fellow ‘Bleeding Heart’ nerds. Men are not welcome and very much unwanted. Especially the sexy Frenchman who saunters into her library reeking of alcohol and looking like he went one too many rounds in the ring.

Gerard Caron is in trouble. Again. Caught with his pants down (literally) he’s forced to seek asylum on Earth while his fairy godmother tries to keep Prince Charming from going all ‘Off with his head’. Maybe, messing around with the King’s daughter hadn’t been such a great idea after all, not that Gerard knew the silly redhead was a princess. But his fairy godmother knows the only way to save his life is to finally pair Gerard with his perfect mate, whether he’s willing or not.

From the moment Gerard lays eyes on the nerdy librarian he knows he must have her, but Betty is unlike any woman he’s ever known. He thought Betty would come as willingly to his bed as every other woman before her, but she is a woman who demands respect and even… horror of all horrors… love. Is it possible for a self-proclaimed Casanova to change his ways?

After reading Her Mad Hatter and loving it I had to buy the rest of the series and am glad I have as again it's another great retelling from Marie Hall!

I'm not a huge fan of the covers in this series as they are very cheesy but I do think that they are better than the original covers!

When I first started this book I wasn't overly impressed with it but once Betty and Gerard meet one another the book improves so much as their interaction with each other is hilarious. You really could feel the chemistry boiling over but neither wanted to admit this. I loved the twist of the tale Beauty and the Beast even if for most part I thought Gerard was the Beast I didn't even think about Gaston! I am going to see a whole new side to him and the rest of the characters when I watch Beauty and the Beast again but I don't mind as it's refreshing to get the side of the 'bad' guys. This is a short read but in those pages so much information is in it that I felt like I was a fly on the wall. The ending was great and I felt everything for Gerard and Betty was cleared up but I know we get to see them again in the rest of the series.

I didn't think I was going to like Gerard at the beginning as he just seemed like all he wanted to do was jump in one bed and then into another, he also seemed so arrogant but by the end we got an understanding of his background that I completely fell for him especially with his French accent! Betty was a great female character as she was strong willed but she also had a heart of gold. I loved most of the other characters in this book and it was great to get a glimpse at some of the other 'bad' boys before their book.

Overall another great book in the Kingdom series!
