Showcase Sunday #96 (Birthday Edition)

Showcase Sunday is a weekly Meme that I am taking part of. This weekly meme is hosted by Vicky over at Book, Biscuits and Tea.
Click images to take you to Goodreads.

It was my Birthday on Monday 8th September which I got a few books which I'll tell you about in a bit but first off here is my book related presents. There was a few other bits that I received but won't mention them all but I did love them just as much as my books!
I also went to a little cafe that was called Once Upon a Time! I also went to see The Guest at the cinema's which has Dan Stephens in it which was really good even if it was gorier than I thought it would be.

So the first one I know I shouldn't love being as I'm a huge book lover and this had 'defaced' an actual book (The Take by Martina Cole) but it's so clever and loves amazing. The second piture is of my new kindle cover as my previous one was ruined. As for the last picture that is of my book ends but seeing as there is no end to my books I put them together maybe one day I could actually use them as intended.

I also went to see Lee Evans on 12th September which let me tell yoou if you haven't seen this man live what are you waiting for? He is absolutely brilliant, so funny and very much humble.

Book Birthday Presents

So glad that I received all of these books as I have waited for them for so long. I have already started Reluctantly Royal which so far is amazing!

BOTM #4

My first book of the month of 2012 so here goes. This is the list of books that I have read this month:
  • Fracture by Megan Miranda
  • Switched by Amanda Hocking
  • Tempest by Julie Cross
  • Blood Feud by Alyxandra Harvey
  • Carrier of the Mark by Leigh Fallon
  • New Girl by Paige Harbison
  • The Life of Lee by Lee Evans
  • Halflings by Heather Burch
And the book of the month is...

With this month I have read mostly good books and was very hard but I did narrow it down to two as they where the only ones that I had given 5 stars to which was this book and Carrier of the Mark. In the end I went with Fracture as there was always something going on and it was more original. This isn't the kind of book I usually read but I loved reading it so I am glad I gave it a try it has made me think that I don't have to stick to the same genre all the time. I just wish there was a series as I already miss the characters so am glad I got a book version as now I can re-read it which I definitely do. Checkout my review here.

Book Review: Tempest (Tempest #1)

Tempest (Tempest #1) by Julie Cross

Format: Paperback (arc)
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Publishes: January 2012
Pages: 352
Main Characters: Jackson, Holly and Adam
Date Started: 7th January 2012
Date Finished: 10th January 2012
Rating Given: ***

Goodreads:
The year is 2009.  Nineteen-year-old Jackson Meyer is a normal guy… he’s in college, has a girlfriend… and he can travel back through time. But it’s not like the movies – nothing changes in the present after his jumps, there’s no space-time continuum issues or broken flux capacitors – it’s just harmless fun.

That is… until the day strangers burst in on Jackson and his girlfriend, Holly, and during a struggle with Jackson, Holly is fatally shot. In his panic, Jackson jumps back two years to 2007, but this is not like his previous time jumps. Now he’s stuck in 2007 and can’t get back to the future.

Desperate to somehow return to 2009 to save Holly but unable to return to his rightful year, Jackson settles into 2007 and learns what he can about his abilities.

But it’s not long before the people who shot Holly in 2009 come looking for Jackson in the past, and these “Enemies of Time” will stop at nothing to recruit this powerful young time-traveller.  Recruit… or kill him.

Piecing together the clues about his father, the Enemies of Time, and himself, Jackson must decide how far he’s willing to go to save Holly… and possibly the entire world.

I was so looking forward to reading this book I just had to get my hands on it as soon as possible which was one of the reasons why I tried to get an arc copy which I was successful in however, I found I was disappointed in the book.

This book reminded me of The Time Traveller's Wife but for YA and like The Time Traveller's wife there was a lot of jumping around from different times so it got very confusing but with Tempest I couldn't stop being confused as sometimes you never knew what time Jackson was in.

It was a slow start and it took me a long time to actually get into the book. The moment when I thought I like this book was right towards the end as there was so much going on but in a good way it was action packed (although I did get lost a bit) and I was wondering what on earth was going to happen next.

There was other parts that was good before the end but not enough to make me want to read the next books but the way in which it ended had me gripped and it was such a cliffhanger I am looking forward to seeing how this will play itself out. On the other hand though I am also very nervous to continue with it.

I didn't really like Jackson to start with as I found he was a bit of a jerk but the more you get to know the reasons behind the way he acts he really starts to grow on me. What he does at the end makes me really like him because it was such a selfless act that the beginning Jackson I don't think would do.

Not sure what to make of Holly as there was a couple of different versions of her and they was a lot different to one another.

I liked Adam's character he was smart and very trusting and a nice guy.

The other characters including Jackson's Dad I just don't know about as there has been so many lies I just don't know what to think of them but I have a feeling his Dad will grow on me as he was starting to towards the end.

Overall a good set up story that really draws you in towards the end.

It's Monday What Are You Reading? #11

It's Monday What Are You Reading is a weekly meme hosted by Book Journey in which we plan our reading week!

                                                                  Just Finished

                                                      Fracture by Megan Miranda
This was my first read of the year and what a great start to my reading year. It was a great book I really enjoyed all the twists and turns I just wish there was more books but it looks like it's a stand alone novel but I did love it.

Switched by Amanda Hocking
This one was a good read just not a great read as it was slow to begin with it just took ages to get going but when it did it got me excited for the rest of the series.

Currently Reading

New Girl by Paige Harison
I am actually enjoying this book more than what I thought I would. It was a bit of a slow start but I am now just a little bit hooked and I can't wait to find out what is going to happen next :)

Tempest by Julie Cross
So far I am a little bit disappointed in this book as from what I heard it was going to be brilliant but I have found myself a little too confused and annoyed at the characters. I hope it picks up but with less than half the book left am not sure it's going to.

Reading Next

Blood Feud by Alyxandra Harvey

Carrier of the Mark by Leigh Fallon

It's Monday What Are You Reading is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish in which we plan our reading week!

This weeks topic is: Top Ten Books I'm Excited To Read in 2012 (This list may include titles that have been released before 2012 but I am still looking forward to reading the series/book)
  1. The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare - I haven't read Clockwork Prince yet so I am looking forward to reading both Clockwork Prince and Clockwork Princess. I absolutely loved the first one and I just can't wait to find out what is going to happen next.
  2. City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare - City of Fallen Angel wasn't as good as the first three in this series so I hoping that this one will be better.
  3. Drake Chronicles by Alyxandra Harvey - I have only read the first one in this series but I loved it so much I had to get the rest that are out. There should also be a new one out this year that I no doubt will read.
  4. Divergent by Veronica Roth - I heard so many good things about this book last year that I couldn't wait to get it myself and I will definitely be reading it in the next coming weeks and I for one can't wait!
  5. Tempted by Julie Cross - I received this book for review and I am very much looking forward to read it.
  6. Everneath by Brodi Ashton - I have been trying to get this for review but was never successful so I am very glad it is out soon and I can't wait.
  7. Incarnate by Jodi Meadows - Another book that I kept trying to get for review but again unsuccessful so I really want to read it now. I love the front cover for this book which was one of the reasons why I wanted to read it to begin with and then there was a lot of high praise for it.
  8. Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi - This book I have seen around a lot and every time I see it, it's another great review for it which has made me very curious to read it.
  9. Chain Reaction by Simone Elkeles - I have read the first two of this series and loved them so I am really looking forward to reading it.
  10. Rapture by Lauren Kate - I am so looking forward to this book with it being the last we should get some answers and I just can't wait to see how it will end bring it on!
