BOTM #4

My first book of the month of 2012 so here goes. This is the list of books that I have read this month:
  • Fracture by Megan Miranda
  • Switched by Amanda Hocking
  • Tempest by Julie Cross
  • Blood Feud by Alyxandra Harvey
  • Carrier of the Mark by Leigh Fallon
  • New Girl by Paige Harbison
  • The Life of Lee by Lee Evans
  • Halflings by Heather Burch
And the book of the month is...

With this month I have read mostly good books and was very hard but I did narrow it down to two as they where the only ones that I had given 5 stars to which was this book and Carrier of the Mark. In the end I went with Fracture as there was always something going on and it was more original. This isn't the kind of book I usually read but I loved reading it so I am glad I gave it a try it has made me think that I don't have to stick to the same genre all the time. I just wish there was a series as I already miss the characters so am glad I got a book version as now I can re-read it which I definitely do. Checkout my review here.

Book Review: New Girl

New Girl by Paige Harbison

Format: e-arc
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Publishes: 31st January 2012
Pages: 304
Main Characters: New Girl (not going to spoil that for you) and Becca
Date Started: 7th January 2012
Date Finished: 18th January 2012
Rating Given: ****

Netgalley:
A contemporary young-adult retelling inspired by the classic 1938 romantic suspense bestseller Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier.
They call me 'New Girl'...
Ever since I arrived at exclusive, prestigious Manderly Academy, that’s who I am. New girl. Unknown. But not unnoticed—because of her.
Becca Normandy—that’s the name on everyone’s lips. The girl whose picture I see everywhere. The girl I can’t compare to. I mean, her going missing is the only reason a spot opened up for me at the academy. And everyone stares at me like it’s my fault.
Except for Max Holloway—the boy whose name shouldn’t be spoken. At least, not by me. Everyone thinks of him as Becca’s boyfriend…but she’s gone, and here I am, replacing her. I wish it were that easy. Sometimes, when I think of Max, I can imagine how Becca’s life was so much better than mine could ever be.
And maybe she’s still out there, waiting to take it back.

When looking on Netgalley I came across this book and I thought it sounded good so I just had to give it a try.

With this being a retelling of the classic novel 'Rebecca' I wasn't quite sure what to expect with never reading the novel which I am glad about as I may have never tried it as it's not my usual kind of book that I would read. I haven't even read Harbison's previous novel so I didn't really know her style of writing so it really was a new novel for me to try and I am glad I did.

It started off a bit slow for me and I thought I was not going to like it but once I got a few chapters into it, it really started to pick up and by the end I had fallen in love with it I just wished it started off as strong as this would have been a five star book.

The other thing that stopped it from being a five star was the ending it just didn't sit right with me as for me it didn't wrap up everything that I would have liked to have known.

I loved the way you never new 'New Girl's' name until right at the end it actually got me thinking that I had just forgotten it until I realised we was just not told.

'New Girl' character was a very strong character as the way she gets treated at her new school is awful but she handled it so well and with dignity I really felt for her. I wish we got to see her happy side as it always just seemed to go wrong for her. She deserved so much better than what she got.

Becca's character is very manipulative with everyone thinking she is the be all and end all when really she is just a unhappy spiteful character.

I loved the mystery surrounding Becca's disappearance it really did keep you guessing right until the end which I think it's great to have a book with a bit of suspense it makes you want to continue a book. You can imagine that this is what would happen in real life if something like this happened which is also a good thing.

I this novel would make a great film or TV show I just think it would translate well and I would love to see it happen.

Overall a slow start but a great book.

It's Monday What Are You Reading? #12

It's Monday What Are You Reading is a weekly meme hosted by Book Journey in which we plan our reading week!

                                    Just Finished

                   Blood Feud by Alyxandra Harvey
This was a great and quick read but I did prefer the first in this particular series.

Currently Reading

New Girl by Paige Harbison
I have been reading this book for over a week now but I don't mind as it's a really good book I just don't get to read on my laptop as much as I would like too.

Carrier of the Mark by Leigh Fallon
I am really enjoying this book which I was surprised about as I have heard a lot of bad things but so far I am really into it and I can't wait to read more.

Reading Next

Life of Lee by Lee Evans
This will be my first autobiography in a long while as I don't usually like them but I really want to like this one as Lee Evans (British comedian) is one of my favourite comedians out there and I just love him so fingers crossed :)

Halflings by Heather Burch
I am looking forward to reading this one!

Teaser Tuesday #6

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along!

My teaser:

New Girl by Paige Harbison

"In the interest of providing correct information to all of you at once, and keeping the school from crippling rumors, I'll tell you what we know. Since May fourteenth, Rebecca Normandy has been missing. It's not clear what happened, only that she was here one moment and gone the next. If anyone hears anything from her, sees her, or is any kind of contact with Miss Normandy , you must tell someone."
I listened carefully, and then felt my stomache plummet through my seat. - Page 40

                                  Blood Feud by Alyxandra Harvey

"The mountainside gaurds know to expect them, but no one else does," he added, "We didn't want the drama."
"All we get is drama." I rolled my eyes, leaving to make my way down to the main cave entrane. Dad's walkie-talkie warbled again.
His voice went grim when he called out to me.
"Logan?"
"Yeah?"
"Run." - Page 15
I am really enjoying New Girl but I did find it difficult to find quotes as nothing too interesting has been happening.
I have only just started Blood Feud today and this was actually where I left but I will be reading some more in a bit.

*Both these quotes are from arcs so therefore may be different from the final copy*

                                                                  Just Finished

                                                      Fracture by Megan Miranda
This was my first read of the year and what a great start to my reading year. It was a great book I really enjoyed all the twists and turns I just wish there was more books but it looks like it's a stand alone novel but I did love it.

Switched by Amanda Hocking
This one was a good read just not a great read as it was slow to begin with it just took ages to get going but when it did it got me excited for the rest of the series.

Currently Reading

New Girl by Paige Harison
I am actually enjoying this book more than what I thought I would. It was a bit of a slow start but I am now just a little bit hooked and I can't wait to find out what is going to happen next :)

Tempest by Julie Cross
So far I am a little bit disappointed in this book as from what I heard it was going to be brilliant but I have found myself a little too confused and annoyed at the characters. I hope it picks up but with less than half the book left am not sure it's going to.

On A Dark Wing by Jordan Dane
These are the two books that I was reading over the Christmas period. I found that they had taken me a while to finish but I think that was down to the time of year as I spent most of my time with my family. I was disappointed in both of these books as I was expexting more from them especially Stolen Away.

Currently Reading
