Sinner by Maggie Stiefvater

Release Date: 1st July 2014

Blurb:

A standalone companion book to the internationally bestselling Shiver Trilogy.

Sinner follows Cole St. Clair, a pivotal character from the #1 New York Times bestselling Shiver Trilogy. Everybody thinks they know Cole's story. Stardom. Addiction. Downfall. Disappearance. But only a few people know Cole's darkest secret -- his ability to shift into a wolf. One of these people is Isabel. At one point, they may have even loved each other. But that feels like a lifetime ago. Now Cole is back. Back in the spotlight. Back in the danger zone. Back in Isabel's life. Can this sinner be saved?

I loved the Wolves of Mercy Falls series so I am beyond excited to see what happens with Cole.

Blurb from Goodreads:

“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

The reason why I wanted to try this book was because it was written by Maggie Stiefvater so imagine my delight . Thanks to Scholastic publishers for giving me the chance to review this book. I loved her Shiver series and even though I didn't like Lament I was still excited to try this book, however I felt the same way I did with Lament.

I don't like the cover one bit but that is probably because I am petrified of birds!

I loved the sound of this book and I thought it was going to be interesting but I felt a bit let down by the book. I found it was a unique take on the paranormal. There was far too much background information that I just got lost. Yes a bit of background information is needed as it's the first book but it just made it boring. I am hoping that the next book will have less information and more of a story if not I won't be able to continue. There was times when I didn't even want to pick the book back up as I felt like it was a chore to read. Even though I was bored at time, there was parts that was very entertaining and had me gripped. The ending had a lot of twists and turns that I wasn't expecting which I liked.

I didn't really feel connected to the characters. Blue was funny at times but other times she was a bit annoying. Gansey seemed to have a split personality as one minute he would act like a snob and then other times he seemed sweet and would do anything for anyone. Adam I actually liked at the beginning but then throughout the book I went off him. Ronan was just annoying. Noah was my favourite character but wasn't in it much but there was a reason behind this which I for one never saw coming. I was expecting a bit more romance than what we got if you could even say romance. I think that might change throughout the series.

Overall it was a bit information overload but there was times when I enjoyed it. I will most likely continue with the series in the hope that it will pick up.

Teaser Tuesday #39

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! To find out more about the books click on the picture which will take you to Goodreads.

My teaser:

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

Today, Blue thought, is the day I stop listening to the future and start living it instead.
"Blue, if you get to know him -" Calla started. She was standing half-in, half-out of the doorway. "You'd better guard your heart. Don't forget that he's going to die." - Page 183 (ARC Copy so quote may differ to final version.)

I have nearly finished this book but I am still not into it as much as her Shiver series but I'm hoping that the ending or even the next book will get better!

Book Review: Ballad: A Gathering Faerie (Books of Faerie #2)

Ballad: A Gathering Faerie (Books of Faerie #2) by Maggie Stiefvater

Format: Paperback
Publisher: Scholastic
Published: 5th May 2011
Pages: 336
Main Characters: James and Nuala
Date Started: 5th September 2011
Date Finished: 11th September 2011
Rating Given: *

Goodreads:

In this mesmerizing sequel to "Lament", music prodigy James Morgan has joined his best friend, Deirdre, at a private conservatory for musicians. James' almost unearthly gift for music has attracted the dangerous attentions of Nuala, a soul-snatching faerie muse who fosters and feeds on the creative energies of exceptional humans until they die. Composing beautiful music together leads James and Nuala down an unexpected road of mutual admiration ...and love. Haunted by a vision of raging fire and death, James realizes that Deirdre and Nuala are being hunted by the Fey and plunges into a soulscorching battle with the Queen of the Fey to save their lives.

After reading the Shiver series I was excited to read what Maggie Stiefvater could offer me. I read the first one in this series Lament and thought it was good not as good as Shiver but still not bad but then I read this book...
The reason for giving this book only one star was because I really didn't like it at all from start to finish. When I first started it I knew I wasn't going to like it and usually I am proven wrong but in this case I was proved right. I couldn't stand the main characters James and Nuala. James I found was just plain annoying and arrogant and I just didn't understand why anyone would fall in love with this guy, I never warmed to him which I usually do so I was very surprised that I actually hated him. As for Nuala I just didn't get who she was about until right at the end and I still didn't like her. In this book Deidre was a side character (who was the main character in the first book Lament) and she was just as annoying as the main characters I liked her in Linger but in this one I just didn't care what was going to happen to her. There was some other side characters which I actually liked and wished there was more about them especially Paul and Sullivan.
I loved the way it was about the music as it was very intriguing just like the first one and it was written beautifully and I would have probably liked this book more if the characters was more lovable.
I hated the ending as well as I was just starting to get into it and then it was ended in that way which left more answers than questions and there doesn't seem to another book in this series that I can tell I hope there is just for the readers who love this book so that they can get the ending that they deserve but I don't think I would read it as I wasn't a huge lover of the first one and then not to like this one I would just think reading another would be a waste of my time.
