Goodreads:
When Wendy Everly was six-years-old, her mother was convinced she was a monster and tried to kill her. It isn't until eleven years later that Wendy discovers her mother might have been right. With the help of Finn Holmes, Wendy finds herself in a world she never knew existed - a world both beautiful and frightening, and Wendy's not sure she wants to be a part of it.

I was asked if I wanted to review this book from the people over at St. Martin's Press and after seeing the front cover and reading what it was about I jumped at the chance.

In this book we find out about the world of trolls which I haven't read anything about trolls and especially not in the way that Hocking portrays them so it was very new to me. I wasn't and still aren't quite sure what to think about the different take on trolls I think it might be a bit too different to what we are used to I was more expecting it to be a world of faeries as that was what it sounded more like than trolls.

I didn't really get into the beginning of the story as I wasn't that keen on the lead female character Wendy as I didn't like her traits, she wasn't a likable character as she was mean and angry all the time but by halfway through she actually grew on me and she did seem different to how she was like at the start of the book. By the end of the book I ended up routing for and hoping that everything turned out well for her, even though I knew it was a trilogy and there wouldn't be a happy ending I couldn't help wishing one for her.

I felt the same about the male lead Finn in the way I didn't really like him that much at the beginning but then when things started to get explained he had really grown on me. I think this is because we go through the journey in Wendy's eyes so we then feel the same way about Finn.

I did like most of the side characters well the nice ones like Matt and Rhys and even Willa and their relationship between them and Wendy was really sweet and I would love to see more of this in the books to come.

I found that this was more of a set-up of what is to come and from this book I am looking forward to find out what that is.

Even though it was a bit of a bumpy start it did end up being an enjoyable read.

  1. I read this book a long time ago and I can remember feeling the same way as you. It does start off very slowly and Wendy definitely isn't the most likeable character. But I did enjoy it more as I carried on reading. I never did read anymore of the series though!

    Great review :)
